Editing Startup Items for Improved Performance
The Windows start up section of the registry determines what programs load during the startup process. Many applications install startup entries automatically which can decrease the performance of a PC.
These entries should be reviewed occasionally to remove entries which are not needed for operations. Remember removing the startup entries does not remove the programs from use. This simply prevents the program from loading into RAM: thus saving the allocated RAM for the system and other programs. These programs will still startup if the program has been launched manually.
One of the symptoms of low resources are sluggish performance and hiccups in normal computing.
In order to review your startup items select Start>Run and type "Msconfig"
Once the Msconfig utility opens select the "startup" tab
Here you can review all items which launch during the startup process. There will be certain entries in this list which are required for certain functions. These functions will include references for your virus software, any spy ware or firewall services and typically printing software. These types of items should always remain enabled.
To disable an item from startup remove the check mark beside the entry to disable it. Once you have disabled the desired entries you will need to save this information by selecting the apply button and then the OK button. You will be prompted to restart your computer for the changes to take effect. Once rebooted an on screen notification will be displayed stating that changes have been made. Note: in the lower left portion of this notification there is a selection to not show the notification again.
If for any reason you experience issues with software after completing this operation you can enable the entry for the problem software by repeating this process.
If for any reason you cannot identify the entry which needs to be enabled you can use a quick and easy strategy to find out which entry is needed. Start by enabling half of the disabled entries (document which entries have been enabled) and perform a restart. If the problem software begins to work normally then it has been enabled and is on the documentation you just created and you can begin to disable the items until the particular entry is identified.
If the program has not been fixed you can proceed by disabling those items once again and enabling the remaining half (once again documenting which entries were enabled) and performing a restart. Once the program issue has been resolved you have identified which grouping of startup items the process belongs to. You can either continue to use the "half "strategy and disable the items one at a time performing a restart between each until the process that is required for the program to operate is identified.
